I decided to launch a site blog for flyfishreviews.com. This way I can post updates to the site as they happen without clogging up the forum with stuff. We have some exciting news coming up about the site and it's operations. I'll post the news here as it happens.
A little backstory on this site and it's ops. I've personally been fly fishing for approximately 20 years now throughout PA, MD, WV and MT. Recently, I was shopping for some waders, and I couldn't find a place that had a big selection of waders with reviews. I searched through forums and on Amazon.com, and each had a few reviews, and I was eventually, with a bit of research work, able to figure out what to buy. Through the process though, I thought how nice it would be if there was a central site that was just for fly fishing product reviews. Not a sales driven site, but a site where everyone reviewed the gear they use when they fish.
That's how flyfishreviews.com was born. Our goal is to provide a site that allows for reviews on as many fly fishing products as we can find. It's been an ongoing process of finding products and adding them to our database. This is a time consuming process, and we're only really about 50% or 60% there in terms of populating the database with the most common fly fishing products as of writing this article. All of this time and the promotion of the site through our kick off promotions (free flyboxes etc.) costs money. You'll notice we have ads on our site to help cover the costs of operating the site.
The biggest challenge is getting people to write reviews for the products on the site. We hope to be able to continue to offer free gifts to those who perform the best on the site. We're currently considering grading the reviews and offering bigger prizes for better reviews. You might have also seen on the homepage that we're offering money for anyone interested in writing articles for us that provide an in depth review of a product. We hope to continue to offer money and eventually bigger prizes to those who write for us.
Flyfishreviews.com currently has a staff of 3 who handle financial, technical and marketing related operations. In order to have a successful site, we feel that we'll need to eventually have more employees, who can help spread the load of technical issues, financial matters and marketing the site. In order to handle all of these aspects and still have good content that people want to come to the site for, we need help in the generation of content. There are some great fly fishermen and women out there who have some writing skills and maybe even write professional gear reviews for other companies or websites. We'd like to interact with anyone who has prior experience in writing professional reviews.
We hope flyfishreviews is a useful site, and that you share it with your fishing buddies and continue to help build a database of meaningful reviews. The site will eventually provide a valuable tool to anyone looking to purchase fly fishing equipment in the future.
